Medieval Spain was an incredible melting pot of culture - ordinary people and rulers from the three monotheistic religions shared the Iberian Peninsular in comparative peace and tolerance. Andalusia is a word of many connotations - originally from the Arabic al 'andalus meaning land of the Wandalun or Vandals, it now refers both to a culture that originated in Muslim Spain that was subsequently developed in the courts of North Africa as well as to the name of the southern Spanish region today.
