Jon Banks - harp, qanun

Jon Banks is a specialist in early and Middle Eastern string instruments, especially the medieval harp, the santur and the qanun. He has toured, recorded and broadcast extensively in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas with groups including The Burning Bush, The Jocelyn Pook Ensemble, The Globe Theatre and Sirinu.

As a qanun player he has made an extensive study of the Eastern maqams and featured as a soloist with members of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; projects involving the harp have included reincarnating the instrument as the ancient Persian chang in concerts with traditional Iranian musicians.

Other current groups include the duo String Fellows, the Middle Eastern ensemble Mawwal, and regular recording for film and TV. He studied music at Oxford University, and now lectures on Middle Eastern Music, Acoustics and Music and Science. Jon's website.
